Below is a sequence of activities for a one-hour meeting for a small group of people that wanted to take look at the past (a retro perspective) and plan for the future (a future perspective).

I have used a few activities from FunRetrospectives.com. Below I share the sequence as well as a template for Mural and for the FunRetro app for the respective remote activities.

Context Set-up

Let´s take look at the past (a retro perspective) and plan for the future (a future perspective). Consider the period from X months ago and going up to 202X.

Prime directive

I have selected the futurospective prime directive:

The Futurospective Prime Directive

‘Hope and confidence come from proper involvement and a willingness to predict the unpredictable. We will fully engage on this opportunity to unite around an inclusive vision, and join hands in constructing a shared future.’

Paulo Caroli and TC Caetano from the FunRetrospectives book.

Energizer

I have used ´the Ball asks´ activity to get everyone started (and to share a few laughs).

Check-in

I decided to go without a check-in activity.

Main course (futurospective)

I have selected the Speed Car – Abyss activity.

is a forward-thinking exercise, with an eye on the past. It is a mix of retrospective and futurespective, which uncovers risks and actions.

Step by Step:

  1. Let’s start by looking back. Please, write notes and place them on the following two areas on the left side of the drawing: engine and parachute.

  2. Group notes and debate

  3. Now, let’s look ahead at the near future. Please, write notes and place them on the following two areas on the right side of the drawing: abyss and bridge.

  4. Group notes and debate

Check-out activity – Following Up on Action Items

Following Up on Action Items is used for organizing an action item list. Lack of accountability for action items is a common complaint about retrospectives. This activity provides a simple and direct way to follow up on previously identified items.

During the Speed car abyss activity some action items were identified.

In this check-out activity the group decided on the owners and due dates for these action items.

    Remote template

Please find below a template from Mural.

All activities on the FunRetrospectives.com have a ´Start Now´ button that creates the respective remote board. Once you have selected one activity, go to the summary page and add the other activities – typically energizer, check-in and check-out — and your full board is ready.

Btw, the FunRetro newest feature — organize your retrospectives by teams — has been receiving lots of complements.

    Enjoy it!
