They have not done a retrospective before this one. They want to retrospect on the past year and take the learnings forward to the year that is starting. They have scheduled 1 and ½ hours.

Prime directive

I have selected the Team Building prime directive. This was difficult to choose, especially that it feel like a mix of retrospective, futurospective and team building. They did not have any retrospective before this one, and it does not seem to have any big issue amongst the participants, neither it is a specific planning session (futurospective). Therefore, I decided to use the team building prime directive to foster the team spirit.

‘Cooperation is the act of working with others and acting together to accomplish a job. Team is a partnership of unique people who bring out the very best in each other, and who know that even though they are wonderful as individuals, they are even better together. Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.’ – Paulo Caroli and TC Caetano

Energizer

I have selected the Fun fact activity.

The participants do not know a lot about each other. So, I decided to use the Fun Fact energizer. It is fast and give the opportunity for people to get to know a little more about each other.

I also selected it, so each participant starts using a dedicated post-it color. This will be useful for the next activities.

Check-in

I have selected the peaks and valley timeline activity.

People have joined in different moments in time. And they are from different regions, which had different ups and downs. I will use the line color as per the color they selected for themselves on the Fun Fact activity (it is only 10 people, so the color coding might work fine to quickly identify each person notes).

This activity also gives a chance for people to express how they felt, even before going into too much detail about it. This should cover the retrospective (looking back) aspect. So I can use the next activity to focus on for future things, improvements. This check-in should open their appetite to the main course.

Main Couse

I have selected the FLAP activity: Future direction, Lessons learned, Accomplishments and Problem areas.

This whole session main goal is to look at the learnings from last year to take forward to the upcoming year. Perhaps this activity takes care of this while keeping a good place for celebrating the accomplishments and being very specific about problem areas and possible future directions for the group.

Check-out

I selected the WHO-WHAT-WHEN activity to close the retrospective and try to get some actionable outcomes. The participants could volunteer themselves (WHO) to some of the topics they raised on the FLP activity (WHAT) and bring the proposal solution or take over the agenda for one of their scheduled meetings for exploring the topic (WHEN).

One word before leaving I added the retrospective with this quick activity, so people can leave a message, one word before leaving the retrospective.

Remote retrospective

Here is this retrospective Mural template for this sequence. And here is a similar retrospective template on Miroverse.

I did use App.FunRetrospectives com for the Fun fact (anonymous) activity, and for tracking the team retrospective history (I added this retrospective notes to the Group area).

Enjoy and keep on having effective and fun retrospectives!

Please find below the activities as well as a Mural and a Miro template for a great retrospective sequence agenda.
